Cotton vs Rayon vs Polyester: Which Fabric Is Best for Indian Summer?

Compare cotton, rayon and polyester for breathability, comfort, price and care to find the best summer fabric for India.

Quick answer: Cotton and rayon are the best fabrics for Indian summers. Cotton is the most breathable and durable; rayon is lighter, cooler and drapes beautifully, which is why it dominates summer kurtis and dresses. Polyester is the least comfortable in heat but the cheapest and easiest to care for — choose lightweight or moisture-wicking polyester if you must use it.

From April to September, most of India deals with heat above 35°C and high humidity. Fabric choice decides whether a garment sells — and whether customers come back. Here's how the three most common summer fabrics compare.

Cotton: the reliable all-rounder

Cotton fibres have tiny channels that absorb sweat and let air pass. That's why a cotton shirt feels fresh even on a humid day.

Best for: shirts, nightwear, kidswear, everyday kurtis, innerwear.

Popular summer cottons: cambric, voile, mulmul, poplin, and cotton linen-look slubs.

Tip: choose 90–120 GSM for summer, and buy sanforized or pre-washed cotton to avoid size complaints.

Rayon: the summer fashion favourite

Rayon (also sold as viscose) is made from regenerated wood pulp. It isn't purely natural or synthetic — it's "semi-synthetic". It absorbs moisture even better than cotton and has a fluid drape that makes kurtis, palazzos and dresses flow.

Best for: printed kurtis, anarkalis, palazzos, maxi dresses, tops.

Things to watch:

  • Rayon is weak when wet — advise hand wash or gentle cycle.
  • It can shrink more than cotton; always test a washed sample.
  • Choose good-quality viscose yarns to avoid fading in bright prints.

Searches for "rayon fabric" and "rayon cloth" are very high in India because it powers the ethnic-wear market. Our rayon vs viscose vs modal vs Tencel guide explains the family in detail.

Polyester: when it makes sense

Pure polyester traps heat and doesn't absorb sweat, so it's not ideal for summer daywear. But it has a place:

  • Budget printed ranges where price matters more than comfort.
  • Sportswear with moisture-wicking (dri-fit) finishes that pull sweat to the surface.
  • Crepe and georgette styles where the fabric is light and loose-fitting.
  • Linings under cotton or rayon outers.

If you use polyester for summer, keep it light (under 120 GSM), loose-fitting and consider blends with cotton or viscose.

What about blends?

  • Poly-cotton: cheaper and less wrinkly than cotton; reasonably comfortable.
  • Cotton-rayon: soft drape with better strength.
  • Poly-viscose: popular for kurtis and suiting; balances cost and comfort.
