Denim Weight Guide: Ounces, GSM and Which Weight to Choose
Understand denim weight in ounces and GSM, lightweight vs midweight vs heavyweight denim, and which weight suits jeans, shirts and jackets.

Quick answer: Denim weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz). Lightweight denim is under 10 oz (about 340 GSM) and suits shirts and summer jeans. Midweight denim, 10–13 oz (340–440 GSM), is the standard for everyday jeans. Heavyweight denim is above 13 oz and is used for workwear, jackets and raw-denim collections.
Denim is one of the most searched fabrics in India, and one of the easiest to get wrong in a bulk order. The same "blue denim" can be a soft 6 oz chambray-like fabric or a stiff 14 oz workwear cloth. This guide explains how weight works and how to choose the right one.
Ounces and GSM: the conversion
Most of the world quotes denim in oz per square yard, while Indian mills and buyers often use GSM. The conversion is simple:
- 1 oz/yd² = 33.906 GSM
| Denim weight (oz) | Approx. GSM | Category |
|---|---|---|
| 4–6 oz | 135–205 | Very light (shirting, dresses) |
| 7–9 oz | 235–305 | Lightweight |
| 10–11 oz | 340–375 | Light-midweight |
| 12–13 oz | 405–440 | Midweight |
| 14–16 oz | 475–545 | Heavyweight |
| 17 oz + | 575 + | Extra heavy / specialist |
Remember that denim is usually weighed before washing (rigid or "loomstate"). Garment washing can reduce weight by 5–10%, so a 12 oz fabric may finish closer to 11 oz.
Lightweight denim (under 10 oz)
Lightweight denim is soft, drapes easily and is comfortable in heat — useful for India's long summers.
Best for: denim shirts, dresses, skirts, kidswear, summer jeans and jeggings.
Watch out for: lower durability at stress points like the crotch and pockets, and more visible see-through in light shades.
Midweight denim (10–13 oz)
This is the workhorse of the jeans industry. It balances comfort, structure and durability and takes washes and fades well.
Best for: men's and women's jeans, trucker jackets, overshirts and most retail denim lines.
Most Indian brands selling jeans in the ₹999–₹2,999 range use 10–12 oz denim, often with 1–2% elastane for stretch.
Heavyweight denim (13 oz and above)
Heavy denim is stiff at first and softens with wear. It is popular with premium and "raw denim" brands because it fades in high contrast and lasts for years.
Best for: workwear, jackets, aprons, bags and premium selvedge jeans.
Watch out for: higher cost per metre, longer break-in, and heat in summer.
Stretch vs rigid denim
- Rigid denim (100% cotton): classic look, holds shape, no stretch.
- Comfort stretch (1–2% elastane): the most popular choice for slim and skinny fits.
- Power stretch (3%+ elastane or polyester-blend core): used in jeggings and very skinny fits; recovery quality matters a lot.
Stretch denim of the same weight feels lighter on the body because it moves with you.
Other things to check besides weight
- Width: denim usually comes in 58"–60" width. Check usable width after the selvedge.
- Shrinkage: sanforized denim should shrink under 3%. Unsanforized "shrink-to-fit" denim can shrink 8–10%.
- Weave: most jeans use 3×1 right-hand twill; left-hand twill feels softer; broken twill reduces leg twist.
- Dye: indigo depth (ring-dyed vs fully penetrated) controls how it fades.
- Skew: leg twisting after washing is caused by fabric skew — ask for skew test results.
Choosing the right denim for your collection
| Product | Suggested weight | Stretch |
|---|---|---|
| Women's skinny jeans | 9–11 oz | 2–3% elastane |
| Men's slim jeans | 11–12.5 oz | 1–2% elastane |
| Straight / relaxed jeans | 12–13.5 oz | Rigid or 1% |
| Denim jacket | 12–14 oz | Rigid |
| Denim shirt | 5–8 oz | Rigid or 1% |
| Kidswear | 6–9 oz | 1–2% |
