Quick answer: Linen is a natural fabric woven from flax fibres. It is one of the most breathable and fastest-drying fabrics, which makes it ideal for summer shirts, trousers, kurtas and dresses in India. It wrinkles easily and costs more than cotton. In the market you'll find pure linen, cotton-linen blends and "linen-look" fabrics made from cotton, viscose or polyester slub yarns.
"Linen", "linen fabric" and "linen cloth" together get tens of thousands of searches a month in India — and much of what is sold as "linen" isn't 100% linen. This guide helps you know what you're buying.
What is linen?
Linen comes from the stem of the flax plant. The long fibres are separated, spun into yarn and woven. Flax fibres are thicker and stronger than cotton, which gives linen its characteristic slubby texture, crisp hand and cool feel.
Types of linen in the Indian market
| Type | Composition | Feel | Price level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure linen | 100% flax | Crisp, cool, textured, wrinkles a lot | High |
| Cotton-linen | Typically 45–55% linen | Softer, fewer wrinkles | Medium-high |
| Viscose-linen | Linen + viscose | Fluid drape, soft | Medium |
| Linen-look / slub cotton | Cotton slub yarns | Linen texture, cotton feel | Low-medium |
| Poly-linen look | Polyester slub | Linen look, less breathable | Low |
Always ask for the exact composition in writing. A label saying "linen" on a ₹150/m fabric is almost certainly a blend or a look-alike.
Common GSM ranges
- Shirting: 120–170 GSM
- Kurtas, dresses: 140–190 GSM
- Trousers, blazers: 190–260 GSM
- Home textiles (curtains, table linen): 180–300 GSM
Advantages of linen
- Highly breathable — loose fibre structure lets heat escape.
- Moisture-absorbent and quick-drying.
- Strong — one of the strongest natural fibres, and stronger when wet.
- Gets softer with every wash.
- Natural and biodegradable, with relatively low water use for flax.
Disadvantages
- Wrinkles easily — part of linen's charm for some, a dealbreaker for others.
- Costlier than cotton and most blends.
- Can feel stiff before washing.
- Can shrink 3–5% if not pre-washed.
How to spot real linen
- Crumple test: pure linen wrinkles deeply and quickly; poly look-alikes bounce back.
- Slubs: real linen has irregular thick-thin yarns throughout, not a repeating pattern.
- Feel: cool to the touch and slightly crisp.
- Water test: linen absorbs a drop of water fast; polyester lets it bead.
- Burn test (on a thread, safely): linen burns like paper with grey ash; polyester melts into a hard bead.
- Price: pure linen is never the cheapest fabric on the shelf.
Best uses
- Summer shirts and kurtas
- Relaxed trousers and co-ord sets
- Resort and holiday wear
- Premium home textiles: curtains, cushion covers, table linen
Care tips
- Wash in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle.
- Avoid over-drying — remove while slightly damp and iron.
- Iron on high with steam, or embrace the relaxed look.
- Store folded loosely; avoid sharp creases in the same place.
Frequently asked questions
Is linen better than cotton for summer?
Linen breathes and dries faster than most cotton, so it feels cooler in heat.
Why is linen expensive?
Flax is harder to grow, process and spin than cotton, and much is imported.
Does linen shrink?
Yes, 3–5% if not pre-washed. Ask for pre-shrunk fabric for garments.
Is cotton-linen good?
Yes — it's softer, cheaper and wrinkles less, while keeping much of linen's look.
