Polyester vs Cotton Fabric for Bulk Garment Orders: Which Should You Choose?
Compare polyester and cotton fabric on price, durability, shrinkage, breathability and colour fastness, and when a poly-cotton blend is smarter.

Quick answer: For bulk garment orders, polyester is cheaper, more durable, wrinkle-resistant and colour-fast, so it suits uniforms, sportswear, linings and fast fashion. Cotton is more breathable and comfortable in heat, so it suits shirts, kurtis and summer wear, but it costs more and can shrink. Many manufacturers choose a poly-cotton blend to get the best of both.
"Polyester fabric" and "cotton fabric" are two of the most searched fabric terms in India, each with tens of thousands of searches every month. For a brand or manufacturer, choosing between them affects your cost, your returns and your customers' comfort. Here's a practical comparison.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Polyester | Cotton |
|---|---|---|
| Indicative bulk price | Lower (about ₹60–150/m) | Higher (about ₹110–220/m) |
| Durability | Very high; resists tearing and abrasion | Good; weakens with frequent washing |
| Shrinkage | Under 1–2% | 3–5% unless pre-shrunk |
| Colour fastness | Excellent; prints stay bright | Good with reactive dyes; can fade |
| Breathability | Lower; can feel warm | High; best for summer |
| Moisture | Dries fast, doesn't absorb sweat | Absorbs sweat, dries slowly |
| Wrinkles | Wrinkle-resistant | Wrinkles easily |
| Lead time | Large running stock, faster | Depends on yarn and processing |

Why choose polyester
Polyester is a synthetic fibre made from PET. Modern polyester is far better than the shiny, sweaty fabric people remember from decades ago — micro-polyester, crepe, moss crepe and textured yarns can look and feel premium.
Polyester works best for:
- School and corporate uniforms that are washed daily
- Sportswear and activewear (with moisture-wicking finishes)
- Printed tops, dresses and crepe kurtis
- Linings and budget ranges where margins are tight
Advantages for a business: consistent shade across lots, very low shrinkage (fewer size complaints), and less ironing for the end customer.
Why choose cotton
Cotton is a natural fibre that breathes, absorbs moisture and feels soft against the skin. Indian customers often associate it with comfort and quality, especially for summer.
Cotton works best for:
- Men's shirts and premium casual wear
- Summer kurtis, nightwear and kidswear
- Brands that sell on comfort, natural fibre or sustainability
Things to manage: buy pre-shrunk (sanforized) cotton, approve shade carefully, and expect more variation between lots.
The middle path: poly-cotton blends
A poly-cotton (also called polycotton or PC) fabric blends both fibres. The most common ratios are 65/35 and 52/48 polyester to cotton.
- Feels closer to cotton than pure polyester
- Shrinks and wrinkles much less than pure cotton
- Costs less than 100% cotton
- Very popular for uniforms, shirting and workwear
If you're unsure, a poly-cotton blend is often the safest bulk choice.
Which is more sustainable?
Neither is perfect. Conventional cotton uses a lot of water and pesticides; polyester comes from petroleum and sheds microfibres. Options to consider are organic or BCI cotton, recycled polyester (rPET), and making garments that last longer — durability is one of the most effective sustainability strategies.
How to decide: five questions
- Climate: Will it be worn in heat and humidity? Lean cotton.
- Wash frequency: Washed daily? Lean polyester or blend.
- Price point: Tight margin? Polyester or blend.
- Print: Bright, sharp prints? Polyester takes sublimation and digital prints well.
- Customer promise: Selling "pure cotton comfort"? Then it has to be cotton.
Checklist before placing a bulk order
- Fix fibre, GSM, width and finish in writing.
- Approve a lab dip or swatch for colour.
- Ask for shrinkage and colour-fastness test results.
- Order the full quantity from one dye lot.
Frequently asked questions
Is polyester or cotton cheaper for bulk orders?
Polyester is usually 30–50% cheaper per metre than comparable cotton.
Which fabric lasts longer?
Polyester generally keeps its shape and colour through more washes.
Is polyester bad in Indian summers?
Pure polyester can feel warm. Lightweight crepe, moisture-wicking polyester or a poly-cotton blend is more comfortable.
What is the best blend for school uniforms?
