Yarn-Dyed vs Printed Stripe Fabric: Differences and Which to Choose

How yarn-dyed stripes differ from printed stripes in look, durability, cost and MOQ, and which suits shirts, uniforms and fashion.

Quick answer: In yarn-dyed stripe fabric, the yarns are dyed before weaving, so the stripe goes right through the cloth and looks the same on both sides. In printed stripe fabric, the stripe is printed on the surface of a woven fabric. Yarn-dyed stripes are sharper, more durable and premium but cost more and need higher MOQs; printed stripes are cheaper, faster and flexible for fashion.

Stripes never go out of style — from office shirts to resort wear. But two stripe fabrics that look similar on a hanger can behave very differently after ten washes.

How each is made

Yarn-dyed: cotton or poly-cotton yarn is dyed in different colours, then arranged on the loom according to the stripe pattern. Colour is part of the structure.

Printed: a plain fabric (often white or a base colour) is woven first, then stripes are printed by rotary screen or digital printing.

How to tell them apart

  1. Flip the fabric. Yarn-dyed looks nearly identical on both sides; printed is paler on the back.
  2. Look at the edge. Pull a thread from a yarn-dyed fabric — it's coloured all the way through.
  3. Check the stripe edges. Yarn-dyed stripes follow the weave exactly; printed stripes can look slightly soft or uneven.
  4. Scratch test. Printed pigment can sometimes feel stiffer than the base fabric.

When to choose yarn-dyed stripes

  • Men's formal and casual shirts
  • Corporate and school uniforms
  • Hospitality and workwear
  • Brands that position on quality and longevity

When to choose printed stripes

  • Trend-led women's wear
  • Kurtis, co-ord sets and dresses
  • Small quantities and many colourways
  • Tight budgets or quick launches

Common stripe styles

  • Pinstripe: very thin lines, office shirts and suits
  • Bengal stripe: bold, evenly spaced stripes
  • Candy stripe: alternating coloured and white stripes of equal width
  • Pencil stripe: slightly thicker than pinstripe
  • Awning stripe: wide, bold stripes for resort wear

Quality checks before ordering

  • Stripe repeat measurement matches your design
  • Colour fastness to washing and rubbing (grade 4 recommended)
  • Shrinkage under 3%
  • Straight stripes without bowing or skew across the width

Bowing (stripes curving across the width) causes big problems during cutting, especially for shirts where stripes must match at pockets and plackets.

Frequently asked questions

Is yarn-dyed fabric better than printed?
For durability and premium feel, yes. For cost, speed and design freedom, printed is better.

Does yarn-dyed fabric fade?
Much less than printed fabric because colour goes through the yarn.

What is the GSM of stripe shirting?
Usually 100–140 GSM.
